The Potager des Princes, an animated animal park in Chantilly

Jean-Jacques Rousseau Park and Cultural Centre in Ermenonville

Created by the Marquis de Girardin, the Ermenonville Gardens are a famous example of the landscaping arts. Their singular design allows you to stroll your body as well as your mind, with the various picturesque installations and paths dotted with multiple tributes to poetry, philosophy and the arts, as well as celebrations of wild nature. A precursor of the landscaped and English-style gardens that would later become popular, the park also heralded the dawn of the Romantic period. Jean-Jacques Rousseau spent the last few weeks of his life here, and was buried on the Île des Peupliers ("Isle of Poplars"), which would eventually become a popular pilgrimage site.
